Lease bidding and the Emerging Geothermal Sector Horse Race

5 pages on BLM geothermal auction July 2009.
This link leads to a document we created with details of a recent auction by the BLM of geothermal leases in Nevada, California, and Utah.
The auction raised $9 million.  We dug up some detailed analysis from the Geothermal Energy Association’s weekly newsletter (first two pages) as well as the actual BLM report of all the bids (the last three pages).
Two points of interest to investors:
1. Magma Energy was a very active bidder and acquired the most acreage.
2. Ormat Technologies, the only other public company that was a successful bidder, was the 15th ranked in terms of acres, but they paid the most per acre, $3,800 per acre for 400,000 acres in Churchill County, Nevada. The Ormat bid was $1.52 million.  With a capital spending budget of about $250 million in 2009, that number is not going to make much difference to Ormat’s near term financial results.

We see this result as indicative of the horse race that is emerging in the Geothermal sector.

Magma recently became a public company in a TSX listed IPO.  Run by the highly successful Ross Beaty (see Pan American Silver, among others) we expect Magma to become a significant player.   The strategy is for Magma to become the biggest pure play Geothermal name by building a portfolio of assets, in parallel.  This bidding is consistent with the strategy.

Contrast that with the likes of Nevada Geothermal, Western Geopower, US Geothermal, and others – all proceeding in a near linear, plant by plant, pattern.

Ormat, the established leader, played the bidding in a cautious manner and probably has dozens of geologists looking very carefully at the available lands.  We suspect they know something special about that particular site. Ormat also has ambitious growth plans having a stable of leases from previous auctions.

It will be interesting to see how both development strategies play out; either way, we like the prospects for Geothermal power in general and these two names in particular.
